MASADA - today we went with Chuck and Lisa to Masada. Started out early as it closes early and takes quite a bit of time to get through. Unfortunately we got turned around a few times and lost about an hour, but we made it there in plenty of time. When we got there, we used the restroom first and I see all these women bright read, sweat dripping from them............and I'm thinking "is it really that hot out there"..........WOW was it ever!! Between the 4 of us we went through 9 bottles of water and wanted more!! However, it was beautiful and very informative.

Masada we the last bastion of Jewish rreedom fighters against the Romans; its fall signnaled the violent destruction of the kingdom of Judea at the end of the Second Temple period. The tragic events of the last days of the rebels at Masada transformed it into both a Jewish cultural icon and a symbol of humanity's continuous struggle for freedom from oppression.
Build by Herod, Kink of Judea, Masada was a palatial fortress in the style of the ancient Roman East. The camps, fortifications and assault ramp at its base constitute the most complete surviving ancient Roman siege system in the world.
The plateau of Masada is located on the eastern fringe of the Judean Desert near the shore of the Dead Sea, between En Gedi and Sodom. It is a mountain block that rose and was detached from the fault escarpment, surrounded at its base by Wadi Ben Yair on the west and Wadi Masada on the south and east. The plateau, 450 meters above the level iof the Dead Sea, is approximately 60 meters long and 300 meters wide. East of the mountain is sediment left by the ancient Dead Sea, scored by numerous cracks.
THE DEAD SEA - like I said, the water is very warm but you do nothing but float. We tried to sink ourselves but could not do it. It is very relaxing!!

The Dead Sea is the lowest spot on earth, 1,290 feet below sea level. It has the highest mineral content of any body of water in the world. Mounds of crystallized salt formations dot the shoreline looming out of the water like eerie sentinels. Nothing grows in the immediate area. The black mud found in vast quantities has scientifically recognized curative qualities. Bathing in the natural sulphur pools or just floating on the oily water are both helpful to people suffering from skin diseases or muscular problems.
